Permanent Alimony
Permanent alimony was a form of long-term spousal support in Florida that could continue indefinitely, often until the receiving spouse remarried or one spouse died. Florida eliminated permanent alimony for cases filed on or after July 1, 2023; courts can no longer award it. Instead, Florida now uses bridge-the-gap, rehabilitative, and durational alimony, each with limits on amount and length.

Legal Definition
Permanent periodic alimony was open-ended support formerly authorized under F.S. §61.08; the 2023 amendment to that statute abolished it and replaced it with bridge-the-gap, rehabilitative, and durational forms for cases filed on or after July 1, 2023.
Example
After a 30-year marriage that ended before the law changed, she received permanent alimony, but couples divorcing today no longer have that option.
